Perception is Everything

You’ve probably heard the saying, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This concept applies to almost everything in life. Recently, I struggled with sleeplessness, often waking up around 3:00 to 3:30 AM. Knowing the importance of sleep, I felt terrible and desperate to find a solution.

With my background in Chinese medicine, I initially thought my wakefulness might be related to my lungs, as I was going through a significant life transition and holding onto sadness, which is often connected to lung health. However, as I researched further, I discovered that this time is also considered the “witching hour,” a period when messages might be trying to come through.

This insight piqued my curiosity, and I started viewing these early wake-up times as an opportunity rather than a problem. Additionally, I came across resources suggesting that the quality of sleep is more important than the quantity. This realization allowed me to relax. Previously, my focus on counting sleep hours caused deep anxiety and stress, leading to a sense of hopelessness.

By changing my perspective (not that I wouldn’t appreciate another hour of sleep), I began using this quiet time for activities I rarely had time for during the day, such as yoga, journaling, Yoga Nidra, and hypnosis. As a result, I feel more empowered and at peace.
